아내와 사별하고 맥주와 육포조각, 그리고 담배 한 모금에 의지해 하루 하루를 살아가는 인생의 낙이라고는 전혀 없을 것 같은 보수적인 늙은이 월터 코왈스키,
한국전에 참전해 동양인과의 참혹한 전쟁을 겪어낸 고통과 자식들에 대한 무감정의 아픔을 가진 폴란드계 이 백인은 시종일관 거친 목소리로 인종차별적 대사와 종교에 대한 거침 없는 비아냥을 토해낸다. 그러나 그의 거친 비야냥은 오히려 인간애와 종교에대한 더 많은 애착을 끌어낸다.
그리고 몇 안되는 배우와 몇 안되는 에피소드, 쇳덩어리에 불과한 자동차를 통해 쇠퇴해가는 미국의 단면 , 인종, 종교 그리고 인간사 모두를 담아낸, 나이가 들어갈수록 줄어들지않고 오히려 늘어만가는 클린트 이스트우드의 능력을 한 껏 보여준 멋진 영화다.
세월이 인생을 좀먹어 갈 때 점점 더 매력적으로 변할 수 있는 사람이 얼마나 될까? 클린트 이스트우드 이 명배우이자 명감독을 볼 때마다 드는 생각이다.
